Summer is Coming to a Close...Lookin' Ahead to Fall

I don't know where the summer has gone but we are already in mid-August and just about 3 weeks away from school opening for the year at my job. I have had a wonderful summer to say the least. Lots of time off from work - these past 2 Fridays were given as days off from my boss "freebies". Gotta love long weekends. I can't tell you how happy I am with this new position. Work/life balance was a big requirement for me when considering this new job and boy, has it delivered. I'm reading and playing games on my Kindle, picked back up my cross-stitch after years, spending time with my family and taking catnaps with the kitties.

When I started this job back in November of last year, I was given approx. 9 vacation days, 1 personal day and 2 sicks days to be used by June 30th of this year. It was so weird this past January to be planning on what I was going to do with all this time because if I didn't use it, I would lose it. Plus with all the holidays given off here and December/March school vacations (in which we get a few days off during that), basically there wasn't a month that I didn't have a day off already. I was so not use to that in my previous job.

But now, I am gladly planning out my days. On July 1st, I received 3 weeks of vacation days, 2 personal days and 6 sick days (again all to be used by June 30, 2013). We are starting with a mini-vacation to Vermont in October. A long weekend in mid-October to a beautiful farmhouse (see pics below) that has awesome views of the mountains (hopefully still within the "leaf peeping" timeframe). We will be staying in the lower level of the farmhouse which is a guest apt. with a beautiful country kitchen, a lovely living room with leather sofa and rocking chair (to possibly do some knitting) in front of the woodstove. These two rooms have a whole wall of windows that look at to the mountains. A king-size bed with a separate bathroom with jacuzzi tub - where I will be most evenings with a nice glass of wine. The kitties are happily welcomed on this trip as well.

I am kind of sad to see summer coming to an end, but Fall is one of my favorite times of the year (besides Spring) and with this trip to look forward to, even makes it more so. I love to go apple picking (which is one of the things we want to do while we are in Vermont). One of the perks of staying at the farmhouse is that we get to gather our own eggs from their chickens in the morning for breakfast and see the sheep in the pasture. I grow up in middle class burbs but always spent my summers in Vermont and loved it. I think deep down inside there is a "wanna-be farm girl" in me.

I also can't believe that in 3 months I will be in my job a year. In ways the year has flown by and I am feeling very settled here too. It has been so great and I am looking forward to starting this new school year to get to know the students, teachers and parents better.

Hope you all have had a wonderful summer too.

  1. What a beautiful farm. We've been so busy I feel like we've hardy had a summer but I'm anxious for fall. We need a break from the heat.

  2. Love the photos. And love that you're planning holidays/vacations. What fun!

I'm also intrigued - you said if you don't use your leave, you lose it? Is that commonly the case? We'd never go anywhere if we had that rule here - we save up leave from one year, and then go away for 4-6 weeks the next year. It's great!

    1. Mali,

Not in every job/place I worked has this policy, but it is a school so they don't want you carrying alot of vacation time from one year to the next. I actually prefer it this way because I want to take trips throughout the year, but in my other jobs, I was so busy, that I didn't use some of my vacation time and it just kept rolling over and never used. When I would leave the job, they would pay me for the unused time. Now I would rather have the time off than the money at the end.
